Cincinnati...a beautiful contradiction

I have lived in Cincinnati for over 16 years and still find it hard to call home. I have the Rockies in my veins from living in Colorado. But ESPN Senior Writer Pat Forde has a piece that describes Cincinnati exactly.

I read this article yesterday. I was born here, and on the first read, my initial reaction was that he nailed some things right on the head, and was off with some others. On further reflection, I think most of it pretty accurate. It's like holding a mirror up to my hometown. I've never lived anywhere else, other than Bloomington, IN for college, so my view is pretty limited.

Yes, I heard about this on 700; and not being from here (my heart is still on the east coast, somewhere), Cincinnati is a VERY odd place. It's very hard to make friends in Cincinnati, because 90% of the people are from here, and have all their friends from high school or college (because they go to Miami or Xavier or UC) and don't really have a perspective of what its like to not be from Cincinnati. That makes the city unique -- loyal and strong community, but myopic (just look at the whole Banks fiasco, the absurd taxes of Hamilton county and how they kill economic growth in downtown) and unwelcoming at times too. But I love it here.
